We have three dogs.
Sky came from the Humane Society. We adopted him August 2009 and he was about 3 months old. The HS thought he was a Catahoula mix probably because he’s merle colored. I was thinking Aussie mix, but we had a DNA test done and he came out to be mostly a collie mix – with Lab, Weimeraner and Jack Russell. He’s a good dog, who has been obedience trained and shown in 4H obedience, but can be stubborn. He’ll go on chores, but he’s afraid of sheep!
Jet is our house dog and is mainly Kelly’s dog. She is a purebred basenji and occasionally goes to dog shows and my daughter, Jade, exhibited her in 4H showmanship last year as well as Junior showmanship at AKC shows. We used to have other basenjis that I showed and lurecoursed – before having kids. Jet is better behaved than they were, although she is related to them – a few generations back. She loves to go on chores – to eat manure! She just growls at the sheep if they threaten her!
Rocket is an English shepherd. He’ll be a year old 2-28-13. I actually got Rocket to help me with the sheep and go on chores, but he (and I) still need work. He likes to bother the sheep so we’re working on his “That’ll DO” comand, which means “don’t bother the sheep”. He wants to work too close and challenge them unnecessarily so I usually have him on leash or a long line if he’s in with them. He obeys really well most of the time, but he’s still a pup and gets excited easily. He has been helpful in driving them into the barn or into a stall but nothing too complicated yet.
WE also have the requisite barn cats. Our two are 8 year old spayed females who know our farm and don’t welcome other cats and keep out of each others way. They do enjoy hunting, but are also friendly pets.
Alex has goldfish and we usually accumulate some invertabrates over the summer too.
