Socks was born 4/17/2004 and was one of our original Icelandic sheep. She was a favorite despite her somewhat aggressive and pushy personality. She became the flock leader as a yearling, when my favorite Jacob ewe, Luna, died of a prolapsed uterus and bossed the rest of flock around, rams included, until she died in June 2011 of grass tetany.
Socks was black mouflon spotted ewe without a lot of actual spots other than her feet and on her head. She was a great granddaughter of Hnykll and Dropi and entirely Yoeman on her mother’s side. She came from Pleasant Valley Farm in Gallion, OH and we bought two white polled ewes at the same time who were her half sisters. She produced the classic Hnykill frosted mouflon lambs on occasion and was a very dedicated mother, although some of her lambs had parasite problems, alhtough she handled parasites well herself as far as I could tell as that was before I started doing fecal egg counts.
Currently we have two of her granddaughters. Ivy is her granddaughter by way of a ewe, Rose, who went to another flock but passed away soon after to an injury that didn’t heal well. Ivy is a black badgerfaced ewe, who carries solid, and is coming in to her own raising twins the last two years. She roos well like her father BDO Tucker and she has a bit of a standoffish personality, like Socks but isn’t as pushy. She is one of our more parasite resistance ewes and is a good mother of nice looking lambs. I think her black mouflon ewe looks especially nice this year. She also has a black gray ewe lamb who seems to be growing well.
Primrose (Black badger Mouflon) is Sock’s granddaughter by way of Ralph, a black mouflon ram who went to Pennsylvania and the Tamarack flock of Janice Jenkins. He was a very sweet ram and produced some colorful lambs for us before he left, including some flashy crossbred triplets. Primrose was born in 2012, which was a drought. We kept her despite her smaller size as many of our lambs didn’t grow well that year. As a two year old first time mother, she’s done an amazing job with her single ram lamb. She has never needed help with him and he’s growing well. He is also black badger mouflon and is very pretty.
